Originally launched in 1951 under the name Ljubljanski dnevnik [Ljubljana Daily], this newspaper was renamed Dnevnik in 1968. Its average daily print run is around 52,000 issues. According to the National Research on Readership, in 2009 Dnevnik was read daily by 111,000 people, giving it a 6.5 per cent daily reach. The newspaper has correspondent offices in Celje, Kamnik, Koper, Kranj, Trbovlje, Novo Mesto, and Jesenice.

The cultural section of Dnevnik newspaper prepares one or two pages per day covering cultural events and cultural policy issues, including reviews, interviews, and reports.

Other editions

Dnevnik issues several supplementary editions – Moj dom [My Home], Denar IN [Money IN], Moje zdravje [My Health], Nika, Antena, Zaposlitve in kariera [Jobs and Career], Pilot [TV programme], and Dnevnikov Objektiv [Dnevnik's Lens]. The Dnevnik Publishing Company publishes also Hopla Magazine (since 1997) and, of course, Nedeljski dnevnik [Sunday Dnevnik] (since 1962), traditionally one of the most popular weeklies in Slovenia.

Cultural projects

Since 1988 the company has been bestowing the Best Actor Award in the Ljubljana City Theatre (MGL) for a role in the previous season. Recent winners have been Petra Veber Rojnik, Iva Krajnc, and Uroš Smolej.

Together with Študentska založba Publishing House Dnevnik Publishing house co-organised the Fabula Festival up to 2012 and funds the Fabula Award for the best Slovene short story collection (since 2006).
