The Institute of Slovene Literature and Literary Studies was established in 1947 and is the only Slovene research and educational institution outside the universities that engages in systematic research in literature. The Institute received the current name in 1972, the last reorganisation of the units at the Institute followed in 2005 when the Institute of Cultural History was formed as an independent institute.

One of the principle focuses of the Institute is research on Slovene literature and literary studies, as well as related artistic, aesthetic, cultural, and historical issues. An additional focus includes theoretical and methodological issues, the modes of existence of literature, its functional, systemic, reception, and axiological aspects, and their reflection in various directions in literary studies.

The Institute's staff carries out comparative-historical, theoretical, and methodological research on literary periods, trends, genres, forms, style, verse, and approaches to literary studies. Their goal is to obtain new findings, open fresh perspectives, and verify and implement new methodologies. Areas that require long-term teamwork or updating of findings receive priority, as well as those of special currency for the profession.

The Institute organises scholarly meetings with broad and international participation. It also prepares print and electronic critical editions of older Slovene works of literature, documentary material, and works in literary history, and also issues scholarly monographs through the series Studia litteraria as well as thematic volumes of proceedings. In addition, the institute co-operates with the Slovene Academy of Science and Arts and other research and educational institutions in Slovenia and abroad, as well as with international professional associations. The Institute’s research staff also does significant editorial work for the scholarly journals Slavistična revija (Slavic Review), Primerjalna književnost (Comparative Literature), and CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture.

The Institute has a library with more than 35,000 units of library material, mainly used for researchers but also accessible for public.

Concept of Books and the Economy of Cultural Spaces

In November 2010, during the year when Ljubljana holds the title World Book Capital 2010, the Institute will organise a two-day international conference The Book: An Economy of Cultural Spaces. The conference will consider the questions of cultural transfer of the literary texts in manuscripts, books, and magazines – as well as institutional forms and social models of literary life through them.

The official languages at the conference will be English, French and Slovenian.
