Launched in 2002 by KUD France Prešeren Arts and Culture Association and the Improvisation Society of Slovenia, the Naked Stage International Improvisational Theatre Festival presents a selection of representative performances of the impro theatres round the world. At the same time it is open to exploring new modes and opportunities for improvisational theatre, and has extended its scope to improvisation in arts and music. In 2010 it went back to its roots, the improvisational theatre par excellence, a spontaneous comedy within the confines of the theatre.

Programme

The annual festival offers a topical insight into current developments in improvisational theatre and allows participating artists to gain knowledge of new areas of improvisation through intensive workshops. Many performances presented at the festival are premières.

While the first festival of 2002 invited individual performers from different improvisational theatre groups to stage international improvisational shows in mixed groups, the second festival of 2003 was a thematic one, based on the concept of character in improvisational theatre. Performances and workshops were given by Unexpected Productions (Seattle, USA); Theater im Bahnhof (Graz, Austria); Improvvisazione teatrale italiana (Bologna, Italy); and Isar148 (Munich, Germany), and improvisers from all around the globe explored the process of creating and developing characters for the final show of the festival. In 2005 Tom Johnson, artistic director and founder of Portland's The Brody Theater, presented his experimental work. The theme of the 2008 festival was Open/Closed and featured collectives Company Blu (Italy); Stella Polaris (Finland); Eric Davis (USA); etc.

Guests of the festival

Every year the festival also presents a festival production, including guests of the festival. The 10th edition of the Naked Stage Festival focused on the work of the improvisational group Kolektiv Narobov, which was the initiator of the festival, and featured a round table Collective Work in the Arts and an exhibition of Narobov's work.

Musicians were also invited in 2010 to present their improvisation skills: Goran Završnik, a pioneer developer of music for improvisational theatre in Slovenia; Igor Bračič, a performer and musician also known as Sadež; and the excellent pianist, Melodrom's and Katalena's Polona Janežič.

Venues

The festival takes place in different locations in Ljubljana, the main part of the programme usually at KUD France Prešeren Arts and Culture Association, some performances also in Stara Elektrarna - Old Power Station, Museum of Modern Art, Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre, etc.
