The character of the publication is both international and interdisciplinary, covering an exciting range of themes from the fields of ethnology, philology, history, archaeology, religious studies, history of literature, and philosophy. It also brings new interpretations of historical sources and presents new discoveries, material, and field research.

In 2004 the journal launched the book series Studia Mythologica Slavica – Supplementa, which to date comprises three titles: Mordovian Mythology (Devyatkina), Pioneers of Jewish Ethnography and Folklore Studies in Eastern Europe (Bar-Itzhak), and Mirila/A Cultural Phenomenon (Pleterski, et al.).
