The Borštnik Awards for achievement in repertory and independent theatres include the Grand Prix for best performance, Borštnik Award for directing, awards for actors and young actors, Borštnik Award for dramaturgy or artistic direction, and awards for stage design, costume design, music, make-up design and/or sound design, the latter ones varying from year to year. The Dominik Smole Award is awarded for best translation or adaptation of a dramatic text. The jury bestows also a Special Borštnik Jury Award, while the Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia gives award for the best production of the past season.
In 2009 the award for best performance went to Ivica Buljan's staging of Heiner Müller's Macbeth After Shakespeare, co-produced by Mini Theatre, Cankarjev dom, Novo kazalište Zagreb and ZeKaEm, Croatia. The award for best direction was given to Jernej Lorenci for his staging of Oresteia, produced by Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama.
The new translation of Aeschylus's play by Marko Marinčič was awarded with the Dominik Smole Award for best translation.
The Grand Prix for the Best Performance in 2014 went to Rudi Šeligo The Wedding, directed by Jernej Lorenci and performed by the Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana, a Special Borštnik Jury Award went to Modern Nô Plays directed by Mateja Koležnik (Borštnik Award for Directing), and performed by the Slovene Permanent Theatre, Trieste.
