Founded in 1994 as a non-governmental professional association, the Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia aims at an all-round development of the area of contemporary dance in Slovenia by providing service support to the non-governmental organisations in this field, establishing the necessary conditions for professional activities, networking, advocacy, as well as by establishing or (co)organising different educational programmes.

Since 2010 the association manages the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance. In 2012, the CDAS started the Ksenija Hribar Awards for special achievements in the field of contemporary dance, awarded at the biannual Gibanica Festival.

Activities

Bringing together dancers, choreographers, educators, critics, and theoreticians of contemporary dance at the national level, the Association's main purpose is active cooperation with the competent Slovenian institutions in the processes of adopting decisions regarding the contemporary dance field. The CDAS also actively supports activities for the development of contemporary dance theory and critique, it organises public lectures, panel discussions, and workshops, cooperates in various events in Slovenia and abroad, and sets up databases. It supports activities for the establishment of suitable educational institutions and other institutional and human infrastructure and facilities for contemporary dance.

Since 2013 the CDAS has been organising together with Bunker Institute, Via Negativa, Maska Institute a series of public discussions titled The Audience Council aimed at constituting a space for reflection and exchange between the makers in the contemporary performing art field and their spectators.

The CDAS is also the partner of the all-year-round pilot training course in contemporary dance Practicum in Contemporary Dance Art, organised by Pre-School Education and Grammar School, Ljubljana and Emanat Institute, intended to art graduates and semi-professionals in the field who wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills.

The Association also closely cooperates with the project Plesna Nacionala (National Dance Gathering), a showcase of Slovenian contemporary dance production that presents exerpts from the current production as well as the activities of associations, institutes, and individual makers in the field. The project is organised by Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia and En-Knap Productions.

In collaboration with Radio Študent (RŠ), the CDAS has been preparing a digital radio dance archive DRADAR, a radio platform intended for archiving and examining the contents, poetics, and practices of the current contemporary dance production in Slovenia.

Ksenija Hribar Awards

The awards honour professionals in the field of contemporary dance in Slovenia whose excellence and innovative work importantly contributes to the quality and development of contemporary dance in Slovenia. The awards aim to encourage an overall development of the field of contemporary dance and are conferred on dancers, choreographers, dance pedagogues, critics, producers, light, set, and sound designers at the biannual Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance. In 2015 the CDAS and the Slovenian Theatre Institute launched a series of talks with individual recipients of the awards.

The awards are named after choreographer and dancer Ksenija Hribar, who was the driving force behind the struggle for the institutionalisation and professionalisation of contemporary dance in Slovenia.

Contemporary Dance Network

Contemporary Dance Network, a project of the Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia, involves 41 dance producers and endeavours to increase the quality of professional work in the field of contemporary dance. It was formally established in 2010 with goals to connect organisations that develop and produce contemporary dance art, to arrange better conditions for the contemporary dance artists and, finally, to increase awareness of contemporary dance in Slovenia and abroad.

The activities were partly funded by the European Union from the European Social Fund. The operation was carried out as part of the Operational Programme for Human Resources Development 2007–2013, the Institutional and Administrative Capacity priority axis.

The Association is a member of Asociacija, Association of Arts and Culture NGOs and Freelancers.
