Organised by the Association of the Friends of Moderate Progress (DPZN) and until 2015 also the MKC Koper Youth and Culture Centre, the Koperground Festival has been running since 2005. Going on in Koper-Capodistria, it is rather different than the usual summer city festival, as it more or less deals with independent and politically engaged international film, literature, performance, and music.

Up to 2014 it took place in the garden of the Koper Regional Museum and partly at the [MKC Koper Youth and Culture Centre

Programme

One of the most distinctive features of Koperground Festival is its emphasis on critical thought, expressed through the choice of film, performances, musicians and invited guests, with whom conversations are held on a daily basis throughout the festival. These guests can be activists, social scientists, artists, producers from the field of culture and so on. The interlocutor is usually [Marko Brecelj], head of DPZN and of the festival, as well as an avid local political and cultural activist.

Film

The movie section presents world cinema with auters like Bela Tarr, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roy Andersson. Collaborations with film festivals from around Slovenian often take place, as for example selections of best films from Stoptrik International Film Festival, Animateka International Animated Film Festival and the Festival of Independent Film. Slovenian film makers, especially those from the creative margins – like the hyperactive Diego Menedes – are also invited to screen their works.

Music and performance

The set of hosted musicians is diverse and until now includes musicians and groups like Rambo Amadeus (ME), Edo Maajka (BA), Kultur Shock (US), Xiu Xiu (US), Bernays Propaganda (MK), Gori Ussi Winnetou (HR), Nina Bulatovix, Žoambo Žoet Workestrao and Ludovik Material. There are also performances by different artists, like the theatre group Building block (US), Saltshakers (NL), Hleb Teatar (RS) and Kolektiv Narobov; the Cirkulacija 2 arts collective and En-Knap Productions; and various other, hard-to-categorise activities.
