Founded in [[established::1999]], the [[SToP Slovene Percussion Project]] is a percussion ensemble whose members aim to combine chamber music and experimentation with new music and diverse sounds and instruments. The group's projects include a broad range of musical events, which sometimes include theatre, and percussion workshops. All seven members of the group are young Slovene musicians, who individually play in the [[Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra]] and the Orchestra of the [[Slovene National Theatre Maribor]] as well as a range of different brass bands and chamber ensembles (eg MD7 Ensemble, [[Slavko Osterc Ensemble]]). They all also have solo careers.

The members of the group [[Davor Plamberger]], [[Barbara Kresnik]], [[Matevž Bajde]], [[Franci Krevh]], [[Dejan Tamše]], [[Tomaž Lojen]] and [[Damir Korošec]], come from Maribor, Slovenj Gradec, Ljubljana, Celje and Velenje. The SToP repertoire consists of classical music, mostly written in the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as their own compositions and contemporary, electrical-acoustic music. The group also aims to bring well-known contemporary percussion works to the Slovenian stage as well as to participate in a variety of projects that incorporate different artistic genres from choral music to contemporary dance performances. Some compositions have been specially commissioned by StoP from Slovene and foreign contemporary composers. The group presents around 30 concerts each year, many of which are aimed at young audiences and have an educational purpose. The group strives to introduce to their audience, through their musical events and workshops, a broad variety of classical and ethnological instruments as well as unconventional instruments like kitchen utensils, car brakes, screws and hammers. The percussion group introduced such various instruments and different techniques of playing with the works of renowned composer Manfred Menke in a performance called Small Kitchen Music.

In 2007, StoP performed a new choral work Cantata according to St. Elisabeth, written by Andrej Misson, together with the NOVA women's choir, mixed choir Carinthia Cantat and the Adoramus men's choir in Kamnik. In 2009, it cooperated with a dance group at the 6th Balkan Dance Platform, which took place at Cankarjev dom. SToP also played works by E. Varèse with the [[Slowind Quintet]] at the Slowind festival in Ljubljana. In 2010, the group collaborated with the Japanese percussionist Haruka Fujii, with whom they went on a concert tour in Slovenia with performances that combined both the Asian and Slovenian drumming tradition. SToP has also played with the [[Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra]]in Sombor (Croatia) and with the percussion group Bing Bang in Zagreb (Croatia). Several internationally-renowned percussionists and composers, including Evelyn Glennie, Igor Lešnik, Nebojša J Živkovič, Manfred Menke and Bernhard Wulff, have co-operated with SToP. The group toured Spain, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republik, Croatia, Montenegro and South Korea. It has also collaborated with the recognised Brazilian composer and percussionist Nay Rosauro and will be performing his works at scheduled upcoming concerts in October.

Members

The members of the group are Davor Plamberger, Barbara Kresnik, Matevž Bajde, Franci Krevh, Dejan Tamše, Tomaž Lojen, Marina Golja and Damir Korošec.

All members of the group are academically educated, with the better part of them playing in the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra. They are engaged in a range of different brass bands and chamber ensembles (for example, MD7 Ensemble), with Tamše also acting as the artistic director of the BUMfest International Percussion Festival.

Projects and concerts

The SToP repertoire consists mostly of 20th- and 21st-century classical music (from Edgar Varese's Ionisation to Manfred Menke's performance called Small Kitchen Music), as well as contemporary, electrical-acoustic pieces. Such works are usually presented at independent gigs at the Slovene Philharmonic or through various projects at the Slowind Festival.

They have, among others, worked with Carmina Slovenica, the Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra and the Slowind Quintet. The group also collaborated with the choreographer Matjaž Farič and pianist Milko Lazar in the performance Shiver: Sound on Skin [Srh: Zvok na koži] which premiered at Cankarjev dom (the production, produced by Flota Institute, was later invited to the festival euro-scene Leipzig in Germany).

Repertoire

Some compositions have been specially commissioned by StoP from Slovene and foreign contemporary composers, though they also frequently present compositions, written by the group's members themselves.

SToP has, among other things, recorded an album featuring works by the most renowned and forward lookin Slovene composers (whose works they also perform otherwise) such as Nina Šenk, Vito Žuraj, Matej Bonin, Larisa Vrhunc, Bojana Šaljič Podešva, and Nana Forte.

Educational programme

By way of their musical events and workshops the group strives to introduce their (younger) audiences to a broad variety of classical and ethnological instruments as well as unconventional instruments like kitchen utensils, car brakes, screws, and hammers. Year-long they organise workshops, seminars and summer schools.

International performances and collaborations

The group has independently played and toured in Spain (there they were invited to the Ribarroja del Turia Percussion Festival and the Festival PerkuLiria), Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Montenegro, Lithuania, and South Korea (there joining the Seoul Drum Festival and participating at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup).

They also played with the Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra in Sombor (HR), with the percussion group Bing Bang in Zagreb (HR), and with the Slowind Quintet in Opicina (IT).

In 2010, SToP collaborated with the Japanese percussionist Haruka Fujii, with whom they toured Slovenia with performances that combined both Asian and Slovene drumming traditions. They also cooperated with other internationally renowned percussionists and composers such as Evelyn Glennie, Ney Rosauro, Nebojša J. Živković, John Beck, Bernhard Wulff, Manfred Menke, Chou Weng Chung, and others...
