Studio Maj Ltd was established in 1989 by producer Dunja Klemenc, who was responsible for children's programmes at Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia) between 1989 and 1997. The Studio Maj filmography began in 1989 with the six-hour mini-series The Betrothed, a Slovene-Italian co-production for RAI TV directed by Salvatore Nocita, and the film Maria Struggles with the Angels, also produced for RAI TV. In 1992 Studio Maj acted as line and executive producer of the short films The American Dream and Bau Bau, and in 1996–97 it produced Animal Tales by Mirza Idrizović, a TV series for children. Production of documentary series started in 1998 with The Truths About Wine, a nine-episode series about viniculture and the culture of wine consumption.


Film production

Studio Maj has collaborated with Casablanca Productions on numerous occasions, eg in 1999 when it was line and executive producer of the short film The Lost Formula of J Puhar by Pavel Grzinčič and producer of the feature film Christmas Tale by Boštjan Vrhovec. In 2000 Studio Maj acted as co-producer and executive producer of the French-Belgian-Italian-UK-Slovene co-production Nikogaršnje ozemlje (‘No Man's Land’), the Academy Award-, Golden Globe Award- and European Film Academy Award-winning film by Danis Tanović. In 2001 it was co-producer of French-Greek-Slovene co-production Lily's Story by Robert Manthoulis, and in 2002 producer and executive producer of Danis Tanović's short film 11-09-01, produced by Galatee Films and Studio Canal. In 2002 Studio Maj produced Polona Sepe's docu-fiction short film Leti... leti... leti... ženska! and in 2003 it produced the animation series Bizgeci ('The Buffons') by Grega Mastnak in co-production with Bad Movies, Greece and RTV Slovenia.

In 2005 Benjamin Filipović's Well Tempered Corpses (2005) was co-produced by Studio Maj and Casablanca Productions together with Flash Productions Sarajevo, ASAP Films of Paris, Cinemark France and Sintra film, Rome. In the same year, Studio Maj produced the feature film Izginuli (Warchild, 2005) together with Christian Wagner Film, Munich.

Studio Maj's most recent feature film, Tea (Teah, 2006), was co-produced together with Gustav Film, Jadran film Zagreb and SPI International, Warsaw.
