The Academy of Music comprises the Departments of Music Performance and Instruments (woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, keyboard instruments), Conducting, Composition and Theory, Singing and Opera School, Church Music, and Music Teacher Training. The academy is situated in the impressive 17th century Stična Manor in the old centre of Ljubljana, some of the courses run also at the Glasbena matica premises.

Background

The first state music school was established at Ljubljana Dome in 1807, but this was later closed. Only with the establishment of the Music School at the Philharmonic Society (1821–1919) did Slovenia acquire its first music school with a modern curriculum. The first Yugoslav Conservatorium was founded in 1919 and in 1939 this became the Academy of Music. In 1953 the secondary programme split from the Academy to become an independent institution, now the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory. In the recent years the three Slovene artistic academies joined forced to launch a new architectural project for a new common educational centre.

International cooperation

The University of Ljubljana facilitates student exchange according to the programmes of CEEPUS (Central European Exchange Programme), Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, and bilateral agreements. Each year the Department of Composition and Music Theory organises the International Solfège Competition. The Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra regularly participates at Young Euro Classics, the international festival of the best European youth orchestras, organised in Germany.
