The Borštnik Ring Award and Borštnik Awards are bestowed at the central festival of Slovene theatre, the Borštnik Theatre Festival, held every year in Maribor. Every year the Borštnik Ring Award, the highest award for lifetime achievement in Slovene theatre, is also presented by a separate expert jury to an actor or actress who has left a major legacy to the Slovene stage.

The Borštnik Awards for achievement in repertory and independent theatres include the Grand Prix for best performance, Borštnik Award for directing, awards for actors and young actors, Borštnik Award for dramaturgy or artistic direction, for stage design, costume design, for music, for make-up design, sound design, and the Dominik Smole Award for best translation or adaptation of a dramatic text. The jury bestows also a Special Borštnik Jury Award, and the Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia the award for the best production of the past season.
