Gibanica (Moving Cake) Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art

Held biennially since 2003, the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art is a competitive contemporary dance festival that aims to offer an overview of the most outstanding Slovenian contemporary dance performances of the preceding two years. The Contemporary Dance Association Slovenia manages the festival in cooperation with a network of partners.

The festival’s name is a pun on the Slovenian verb for moving (gibati) and a traditional Slovenian pastry (gibanica), which varies from region to region.

European Capital of Culture

Nova Gorica–Gorizia, European Capital of Culture 2025

Since its inception in 1985, over 40 cities have won the prestigious European Capital of Culture (ECoC) title. Forty years later, however, the border cities of Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy are the first ones to turn this annual celebration of culture into a genuinely cross-border endeavour. Based on these cities' specific political, cultural and geographical context, their 2025 ECoC programme explores the concept of borders from multiple dimensions under the slogan “Go! Borderless”.

The opening event, From Station to Station, was held on 8 February, the Slovenian cultural holiday.

Orto Fest

Established in 1999 and regularly held since 2001, Orto Fest is an ambitious festival with a wide ranging scope of its musical programme. It takes place in Orto Bar, a legendary bar for rock aficionados, and is usually held throughout the whole of May. Even though rock music is its predominant sound, the festival also offers pop(-rock), metal, hip hop, and folk acts. Besides regularly staging foreign musicians, who are coming from all over the world, the festival mostly hosts Slovene musicians and its yearly selection always features a combination of some older, cult artists with a showing of what is currently happening on the different local music scenes.
