Klub Gromka is a multipurpose space at Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre with a stage and a dance floor. It also serves as an office and rehearsal space for performances and other events which feature various innovative music forms. Other events (poetry readings, lectures, theatre, film and video evenings) also take place here. Gromka sporadically hosts several festival and special events organised by Druga Godba Festival, City of Women, International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns, Ljubljana Jazz Festival, etc.

The beginnings of Gromka go back to established::1995, when performers of various theatre groups decided to set up the Teater Gromki (Gromki theatre). It was basically a street theatre group with strong improvisation tendencies. Some other individuals joined in and it eventually transformed into a club. Its beginnings were regular Tuesday events called Tajna loža živih (The Secret Lodge of the Alive), organised like a semi-public living room gathering with a subtly chosen but mostly improvised cultural programme.

The beginnings of Gromka go back to established::1995, when one of the premises at the squatted military barracks was re-programmed to became a theatre space called Teater Gromki, with 'gromki' meaning loud. Eventually the theatre was transformed into a club with somewhat broader aspirations, and as such also started to admit music concerts and other art forms.

The current Gromka collective comprises a colourful bunch of literature, music and film enthusiasts with one thing in common: "(...) we love our Gromka, it gives us shelter and serves as a location where we can socialise and be creative". The little-big Gromka is located in the very heart of Metelkova, and is different from other Metelkova clubs, because it is not just a concert venue, but can be organised more like a jig-saw. It can transform from a lecture hall into a cinema, from a concert venue into a lounge room or a theatre. Gromka is the patron of urban (sub)cultural and underground practices, a shelter for music left with nowhere to go, a supporter of political activism and informal education, basically founded on do-it-yourself principles.

Yet, political activities were always a strong dimension of Gromka, which for many years hosted the weekly lectures of the Workers' Punk University, organised by the Peace Institute and set up by the sociologist Tonči Kuzmanić in 1998. Working outside the institutionalised academic setting, this very influental 'university' enabled an alternative production of theory and presented an important space for dissemination of autonomous and theoretically ambitious thought.

Gromka is fully open six days a week, from Monday to Saturday. The week usually kicks off with a Retrovizor crew film screening or a poetry or fiction reading of the LUD Literatura group and cinema evenings of the Cultorologist Association, while the second part of the week is dedicated to various club evenings (the regular ReŠetanje of the Radio Student resident DJs, thematic music club nights, etc.) Gromka's programme includes African nights, organised by the African society, occasional theatre plays, performances and stand-up comedy evenings.

Music-wise, the most active part of the programme are currently Defonija, a renowned series for improvised and experimental music; the genre unbound and loud events by KiborgSpužva Büking; the raging R.A.F.A.L. concerts with grind core, d'beat, crust, and other punk and hard core tendencies; and gigs set up by the similarly punk and HC oriented crews of Giljotina and Human Beans .

There are weekly lectures of the Workers' Punk University, organised by the Peace Institute. Working outside the institutionalised academic setting, this particular university enables an alternative production of theory and presents an important space for dissemination of autonomous and theoretically ambitious thought. In an attempt to examine otherwise neglected and anathematised topics, the sociologist Tonči Kuzmanić set it up in 1998; since then, numerous (under and postgraduate) students of humanities have either actively or passively formed their theoretical competences.

Theatre is also still present in Gromka, with the shows usually held on Wednesdays. The concert programme is varied and extremely colourful: in addition to some specific individual concert events, Gromka hosts the ska and street punk concerts courtesy of Twotonebinas, genre unbound and loud events by KiborgSpužva Büking and raging R.A.F.A.L. concerts with grind core, d'beat, crust, anarcho and other punk and hard core tendencies. Improvised, experimental, avant, free music concerts are hosted by Defonija and organised under its wing, while jam sessions are set up by MetlaBluzKoruza and offer evenings of open ended sonic socialisation.

Running an impressively divers programme on almost all days of the week, Klub Gromka is one of the more important venues of the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre. Located in the very heart of it, this multi-purpose space is used for music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, DJ nights, lectures, and so on. Sometimes it is also used for rehearsals and for occasional political-activism related activities.

The place has a stage and a cosy auditorium (which, alternately, also figures as a sweaty dance floor) that can accommodate up to 150 people. While there are two rooms (where bands can stay over the night) set above the club, outside and adjacent to it is the so called Schengen/Black kitchen, a funky place where one can often get a tasty and affordable meal during the night.

The club's programme is run by a consortium of NGOs and individual organisers, and one can find an affordable or admission-free event on almost every day of the week.

History

The beginnings of Gromka go back to 1995, when one of the premises at the squatted military barracks was re-programmed to became a theatre space called Teater Gromki, with 'gromki' meaning loud. Eventually the theatre was transformed into a club with somewhat broader aspirations, and as such also started to admit music concerts and other art forms.

Programme

Music-wise, the most active part of the programme are currently Defonija, a renowned series for improvised and experimental music; the genre unbound and loud events by KiborgSpužva Büking; the raging R.A.F.A.L. concerts with grind core, d'beat, crust, and other punk and hard core tendencies; and gigs set up by the similarly punk and HC oriented crews of Giljotina and Human Beans.

Theatre is also still present in Gromka, with the shows usually held on Wednesdays. Very different groups and producers are taking care of them, one of them being the Emanat Institute with a very curious serious of multi-media events. Other events involve the cinema evenings and discussions held by the Cultorologist Association, clubbing nights, occasional events organised by humanities students associations, and so on. It is home to the Ljubljana International Short Film Festival and the DokuBazaar, Ljubljana Independent Documentary Film Festival

Gromka sporadically co-hosts parts of the festivals like the Druga Godba Festival, City of Women, International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns, Ljubljana Jazz Festival, MENT Ljubljana, etc. It also hosts concerts organised by KUD Mreža and Moonlee.
