In 2003, Vitkar Institute launched the annual Rdeči revirji! - Red Beats! Festival, an international festival of various art forms. Aiming to decentralise access to contemporary arts forms, the festival takes place in the small Slovene mining town of Hrastnik. The programme includes theatre, dance, street theatre, and puppet performances, exhibitions, concerts, film, etc. The 9th edition in 2011 features also the art of comics.

A non-competitive spring festival is intended to bring together theatre people and the people living in a small mine town community to join in a relaxed atmosphere of circus, theatre, puppetry, music, and dance. The performances take place either indoor or in the street. The festival supports all kind of experimental creative initiatives and non-conventional forms that bring art close to the common people as well as organises a programme for children and the youth. The annual invitation to international groups is published in March. The festival's partners are the Hrastnik Cultural Centre, Flota Institute and Bunker Institute, it is supported by the Municipality of Hrastnik and the Ministry of Culture.

Participants

The festival has thus far hosted works by Betontanc, Milan Tomášik and Alexander Gottfarb (Slovenia, Austria), Rozinteater, Janez Janša, and Ryuzo Fukuhara from the performing arts field, Konj Puppet Theatre and Ratatuya (Croatia) from the area of puppetry, the music groups Silence, Kombinat Choir, Slon in sadež, and has featured a number of circus-acrobat events.
