Forming the Art Cinema Network in 2010 was the second attempt to bring together Slovene art cinemas; the first was done in 2003 when the Kinodvor Cinema reopened its door as an art cinema in close cooperation with the Slovenian Cinematheque) and to facilitate their activity.
28 cinemas or screening halls have joined the association: Art kino Odeon Izola, Portorož Auditorium, Nova Gorica Arts Centre, Kinogledališče Tolmin, Kosovel Culture House Sežana, City Cinema Pivka, Film Theatre Idrija, Ivan Cankar Culture House Vrhnika, Franc Bernik Culture House, Domžale, Kino Dobrepolje, Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, Kinodvor Cinema, Sora Cinema, Škofja Loka, Linhart Hall, Radovljica, DPD Svoboda Žiri, Kino Slovenj Gradec, Kino Velenje, Krško Culture House, Institute for Education and Culture Črnomelj, Kino Zagorje, Delavski dom Trbovlje Cultural Centre, Art kino Metropol Celje, Šmarje pri Jelšah Cinema (Šmarje pri Jelšah Library), Kino Rogaška Slatina, Kino Slovenske Konjice (Slovenske Konjice Public Library), Kino Udarnik Maribor, and Ptuj City Cinema. 16 of the cinemas are members of the Europa Cinemas network.
The art cinemas in Izola, Ljubljana (Kinodvor), Domžale, Celje and Ptuj serve as one of the dislocated units for the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Namely, during IFFR Live a few films premiere simultaneously in over 45 cinemas throughout 17 countries. Audiences can communicate with the cast and crew in Rotterdam via Twitter using #livecinema.

It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
