The Municipality of Ptuj of covers a total area of 67 square kilometres and has a population of 24,264 people (2003) living in 10 settlements. It is one of 11 Slovene Urban Municipalities located in the north-east of Slovenia. Ptuj is a member of the Slovene Association of Historic Towns as it traces its origins back to Roman Petovia and subsequently became a culturally rich medieval town. Ptuj is well-known for its annual traditional carnival, the Kurentovanje. Ptuj has been a member of the Federation of European Carnival Cities since 1990. Together with 4 other Slovene towns Ptuj is a partner city in the Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 project.
