Šiška Cultural Quarter

From Culture.si

The Šiška Cultural Quarter stands for a couple of culturally significant locations in the Ljubljana neighbourhood of Šiška, an otherwise predominantly residential area that in recent years started to function as one of the main hubs of urban culture in Ljubljana.

The most active institution in this regard is the Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, which opened its doors in 2009. A few years later, a huge, municipality owned building was re-purposed for cultural activities, and now houses a cluster of offices and galleries run by well-established cultural NGOs, and some individual studios, all selected through a public call. Nearby to this concentrated hub, one can also find the Vodnik Homestead, as of recently a centre for various programmes that more or less relate to literature.

Šiška Gallery Quarter

Furthermore, the galleries active in the quarter have formed a network called the Šiška Gallery Quarter. This is a platform-like project, initiated by the P74 Centre and Gallery, the Photon Gallery, the Vodnik Homestead Gallery, GalerijaGallery, the Universal Studio of Street Arts and Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture.

The aforementioned institutions see and treat this network as a way to coordinate exhibition openings, to collaborate on particular projects, organise shared guided tours and, last but not least, give this part of Ljubljana a new common identity.
