Established in 1997 at Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone, KUD Mreža (meaning KUD Network) nowadays carries out a wide range of activities, from leading an art gallery and promoting concerts, to maintaining an archive and mediating information on cultural funding opportunities. It also manages an archive of photographic, audio and video materials regarding Metelkova mesto and the events occurring there. Since 2003, it has also been coordinating the renovations of buildings within Metelkova Mesto.

Background

Initially, KUD Mreža Association primarily engaged in visual arts projects at Metelkova, but it also functioned as a formal vehicle to the various other initiatives that were active there. Its predecessor was, in a way, Mreža za Metelkovo (The Network for Metelkova), an initiative that worked to establish and coordinate this autonomous cultural centre in the first place.

In the year 2000, coupled with the Society for the Protection of Atheistic Feelings (DZAČ), KUD Mreža also founded the Klub Menza pri koritu, turning it into a very active Metelkova venue that now hosts concerts, poetry evenings, various workshops (circus, stage technique, etc), and many other events. As of 2015, the association is not active in this club any more.

Core projects

Since 2000, KUD Mreža is organising the International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns, which features performances, concerts, exhibitions, urban interventions, as well as video projections, round tables, book presentations, and lectures. For a time, it also organised the similarly diverse [[Personal–Collective Festival], which was primarily oriented towards contemporary improvised music, dance, and visual arts.

KUD Mreža also operates the Alkatraz Gallery, where contemporary art exhibitions, performances and installations take place, and the adjacent Studio Asylum, which hosts artists invited to its Artist-in-Residence project. The latter was launched in 2006, and is operated together with the Art Center Prosenjakovci. In this same field, KUD Mreža also occasionally runs art auctions and organises art workshops (painting, graphic art, sculpture, metal sculpture, etc.).

Another core endeavour are the "Urban Art Projects" [Urbani likovni projekti], devoted to the renovations and art exhibitions in public spaces at Metelkova, from setting up the so called Hajlends Park at Metelkova mesto, to creating mosaics at various façades, setting up graffiti, etc.

Music cycles FriForma and Metabonma

Active since 2007, the music cycle Džezz pri Koritu (held at Klub Menza pri koritu ) has been remade as the concert cycle FriForma, which focuses on improvised music and uses various venues, among them Pocket Teater Studio, Klub Gromka, and MoTA Museum of Transitory Art. Some of its guests were Daichi Yoshikawa, Rie Nakajima in Pierre Berthet, the CRAM music collective, Jean-Luc Guionnet and Lucio Capece; before that, Džezz pri Koritu brought artists like All Included (SW, NR), Marc Ribot (US), Kazutoki Umezu Kiki Band (JP), Mario Rechtern (AT), Linda Sharrock (AT), Good for Cows (US), Gutbucket (US), etc.

This cycle is complemented by the Metabonma, a series that focuses on staging contemporary classical music and which featured Bruce Hamilton (US), SI Brass (SI, AT), Marko Hatlak and Drumartica.

Other international projects

In 2013, KUD Mreža became part of the international research project called "The Future of Work, and has led the consortium that has secured financing for it by the European Cultural Fund (ECF). The Future of Work is a 4 episode web-documentary by Abel Heijkamp (NL) and Julij Borštnik (SI), who are documenting their research into contemporary labour conditions in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Germany and Europe in general. The other partners of this project are Projekthaus Potsdam-Babelsberg (GE) and Zaaigrond filmproductions (NL).

KUD Mreža also acted as the Slovene host for the international project La caravane des dix mots, which takes place in more than 40 countries world-wide. It has also participated in Trans Europe Halles, a European Network of Independent Cultural Centres.
