[[Kranj Urban Municipality]] covers a total area of 148 square kilometres and has a population of 50,825 people (2002) living in 48 settlements. One of 11 Slovene Urban Municipalities, it is located in the central part of Gorenjska, Slovenia’s north western region, at the foot of the Alps. Kranj is an important centre of the Gorenjska region, a ‘University City’ which is home to the School of Organisational Sciences of the [[University of Maribor]]. Kranj is a member of the [[Slovene Association of Historic Towns]]. Gorenjska’s regional television and radio station is also located in Kranj.

The Social Public Activities Department of Kranj Urban Municipality acts as a governance and expert body for the field of education, culture, sports, social security and medical care. It oversees funding and programming, makes strategies and monitors their implementation, co-ordinates the protection of the natural and cultural heritage in the region and overseas the establishment and organisation of public institutions. The three cultural institutions founded by the Municipality of Kranj are: [[Gorenjska Museum]], [[Prešeren Theatre Kranj]] and [[Kranj City Library]].

In 2010 the representatives signed a protocol for another four years in order to organise regular jazz events (concerts, Summer Jazz School HGM and Jazz Camp).
