Launched in 1992 by Strip Core, Stripburger is a pioneer of independent comics in Slovenia. Today, with over 50 editions behind it, Stripburger is still the only Slovene non-commercial comic magazine covering news about comics, theories on comics, and works by Slovene and foreign comic authors. An important part of the magazine is its focus on comic exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad; it has developed into an important resource for Slovene comic fans on the international (and especially European) comic scene, while at the same time being the most important source of information for foreign followers of Slovene comic art.

Stripburger international

Stripburger, a.k.a "a kick-ass international zine (with distinct Slavic flavour)" publishes cartoons in Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, English, with some issues in English only. To date Stripburger has featured artists from such distant lands as Brazil, Israel, Korea, Albania, and Kazakhstan, and has presented work by such renowned figures as Peter Kuper, James Kochalka, Aleksandar Zograf, Max Andersson, Jason, Edmond Baudoin, Stephane Blanquet, Lewis Trondheim, and Joe Sacco, to name just a few.

Ecology, sex, madness, and physical handicaps have all been themes in special editions, while regular features have includes an Anti-nazi Calendar, Human Rights postcards, and Stripburek, a special Eastern European anthology featuring comics from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and of course Slovenia. With its diverse activities Stripburger is exceptional not only in Slovenia but also in the international sphere, not the least because of its concern with thematic issues such as marginalised social groups, human rights, madness, war, and sexuality.

Exhibitions

Since its inception Stripburger has been an internationally oriented collective with exhibitions around Europe (Great Britain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, France, Serbia, Sweden, Finland, etc.) and also Russia. Many of the Stripburger comics can be purchased from the widespread global network of distributors or directly via their website.

In collaboration with the Vžigalica Gallery, City Museum of Ljubljana, and KUD France Prešeren Gallery, Stripburger celebrated its 18th birthday in 2010 with exhibitions, lectures on comics, comic workshops, and with the première of the animated film Stripburger in Motion [Stripburger v gibanju] in Kinodvor Cinema.

Stripburger regularly collaborates with the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, where in 2006 the internationally acclaimed anthology Honey Talks – comics inspired by painted beehive panels reinterpreting the 19th-century folk art with works by 12 cartoonists – was exhibited. In 2009, Stripburger organised the international exhibition Greetings from Cartoonia [Pozdravi iz Striponije] including 6 European comic associations at the same venue.

Editions

Stripburger's five different editions (Minimundus, Ambasada Strip, Republika Strip, O, Stripble) vary in genre and expression. The Republika Strip edition was established in 2002 and is dedicated to the publishing of Slovene authors, including Tomaž Lavrič, Ciril Horjak alias Dr. Horowitz, Izar Lunaček, Marko Kociper, Matej Kocjan - Koco, Iztok Sitar, and many others.
