Prešeren Theatre was officially established as a professional theatre in 1950. It is one of the smallest professional theatres in Slovenia, with a complete cast of only nine actors. Despite its size the theatre often wins awards. Prešeren Theatre is a repertory theatre which stages around 180 performances and four premieres per season.

It organises the annual Slovene Drama Week, which presents the most successful plays from Slovenia and overseas. Prešeren Theatre is working hard to further expand the international part of the festival by devising round-table conferences involving famous dramatists, experts on theatre, producers and publishers, whilst also trying to stage more foreign plays based on Slovene drama texts. The Festival concludes with a ceremony in which the Grum Award is bestowed on the best original Slovene script and the Grün-Filipič Special Mention is awarded for excellence in dramaturgy.

In 2001 the theatre was awarded the Grand Prix at the Golden Lion Festival in Umag (Croatia) for its staging of ‘How I Learned to Drive’ by American author Paula Vogel, while the play ‘Mayor’s Micka’ (by A T Linhart), directed by Vito Taufer, was voted best performance at the Slovene Drama Week in 2002. Prešeren Theatre has received several other prestigious awards for its achievements, including accolades from the Golden Stick Festival in Ljubljana.
