The Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language seeks to extend understanding of the Slovene language, literature and culture on an international scale. It also encourages international research in Slovene language and literature, organises professional and scientific conferences and develops the infrastructure for attaining, examining and certifying proficiency in Slovene as a second/foreign language. The Centre operates under the auspices of the Department of Slovene Languages and Literature, University of Ljubljana. Its activities are arranged in five specific programmes: courses of Slovene as a second/foreign language, seminars on Slovene language, literature and culture, an Examination Centre, and the annual symposium Obdobja ('Periods'). The centre developed the E-slovenscina.si website for learning the Slovene language.

In 2011 the centre established the Jana Zemljarič Miklavčič Scholarship Trust. Its grants support learning Slovenian language for individuals who are either professionally or non-professionally engaged in Slovene culture but do not have Slovene background.

Slovene at foreign universities

The centre supports also the Slovene lectureships (for language, literature and culture) at 58 universities around the world (at 22 European ones the students can obtain a degree in Slovene and continue their study of Slovene at postgraduate level). The support is offered through new text books, proceedings, and learning materials. Teachers are offered further professional training and preparation before their departure for a foreign university and they also teach on various summer courses, at the traditional Seminar of Slovene Language, Literature and Culture (held since 1965), and participate at the annual Obdobja [Periods] Symposium.
