Bela Film Ltd was established in 1998 by a film director Maja Weiss and producer Ida Weiss. The company aims to produce feature, short and documentary films for Slovene and international audience. So far around 20 films of different formats and genres have been produced by Bela Film Ltd.


Its inaugural documentary Cesta bratstva in enotnosti [The Road of Fraternity and Unity, 1999], directed by Maja Weiss, received an official nomination for the Silver Wolf Award at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam 1999 and participated in more than 20 international film festivals. Its next documentary, Ghost Riders In The Sky, was directed by Harry Rag in co-production with Taris Film Productions of Solingen, Germany.

Then in 2000 Bela Film produced Nuba - čisti ljudje [Nuba - Pure People'] directed by Tomo Križnar and Maja Weiss. The same year saw the release of Steklarski Blues [Glazier Blues], a documentary about workers in a Hrastnik glass factory directed by Harry Rag. This film participated in more than 30 international film festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand, Sheffield and Leipzig.

In 2002 Bela Film released its first full-length feature film, Varuh na meji [Guardian of the Frontier], directed by Maja Weiss. This film was released at the Berlinale 2002, where it received the Manfred Salzgeber Award for European Most Innovative Film, followed by a nomination for the Fassbinder Award for European Best First Feature Film. It participated in more than 60 international film festivals.
