Staragara was established as a not-for-profit cultural organisation (zavod) in 2003 by film directors Janez Burger and Jan Cvitkovič. As well as film productions, Staragara also organises and produces dance events.

Film production

As a film production house, Staragara produced Jan Cvitkovič's black comedy Gravehopping [Odgrobadogroba], which saw its world premiere in September 2005 at the 53rd International Film Festival in San Sebastian and received the prestigious award Altadis New Directors Award for the best first and second film of a director. The film has won many other prizes (eg in Warsaw, Cottbus, Palić, Torino, Portorož, Khanty Mansysk, and Setubal in Portugal) and more than 20,000 viewers saw the film during regular cinematographic distribution in Slovenia. The film was co-produced by Propeler Film from Zagreb and TV Slovenia and financially supported by the Slovenian Film Centre and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. The Association of Slovene Film Workers selected Gravehopping as the 2005 Slovene candidate for the Foreign Language Film Oscar award (announced by Association of Slovene Film Workers). Cvitkovič is best known for winning the Lion of the Future award at the 2001 Venice Film Festival for his debut feature Bread and Milk [Kruh in mleko].

Staragara produced the short-feature On the Sunny Side of Alps [Na sončni strani Alp] and in 2010 also an award winning feature-film without dialogs Silent Sonata [Circus fantasticus], directed by Janez Burger and supported by Media Plus (awarded for the best film and best director award at the 13th edition of Festival of Slovenian Film in 2010).

Other film projects currently in development are Driving School and Block of Flats. In 2011 film Archeo, written and directed by Jan Cvitkovič, was premiered at the Festival of Slovenian Film and won awards for the best feature-film, best photography and directing.

Dance and stage productions

Staragara also produces dance and stage performances. In 2003 it produced an evening of four Polish dance performances called The Invasion of the Poles at Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in Ljubljana. In the following year dancer and choreographer Magdalena Reiter of Staragara - together with Exodos Institute - worked on an international co-production of the dance performance Moment - A Study of Suspended Time, and further on as a choreographer worked on dance performances 36,5°C, Modus Vivendi, Heksamiton, Solo, etc.

European Capital of Culture 2012

For the event Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 Staragara will launch the central film project of the event entitled Omnibus, with which - together with the project's art director Jan Cvitkovič - the film directors and authors from the region (Antonio Nuić, Georgy Pulfi, Michael Glawogger, Micheangelo Framartino) will produce and present a film made for the occasion.
